What is Scottish Country Dancing?

Scottish Country Dancing is the beautiful ballroom dance of Scotland and dates from the 18th Century. As in Contra and English Country Dancing, the dances are done in sets of several couples. The dancers work together to dance a sequence of formations to exciting Scottish music and everyone dances each position in turn. Dances are quick and joyful, or slow and elegant.
SCD is a social dance, danced mostly for pure pleasure and enjoyment, although there is slightly more emphasis on steps than in Ceilidh or English Country dancing. However, there are about a dozen basic figures which will get one through quite a number of dances and the basic technique can be learned in just a few practice classes.
Partners are not necessary - you can come by yourself and be assured of dancing throughout the evening. All you need to enjoy Scottish Country Dancing is a soft pair of shoes, comfy clothes and the urge to have fun.
